Transplant Operation

Liver transplants usually take from 4 to 14 hours. During the operation, the surgical team will remove your diseased liver and will replace it with the new donor liver. This involves disconnecting your diseased liver from the bile ducts and blood vessels.

The blood that flows into your liver will be blocked or sent through a machine to return to the rest of your body. The surgeon will than put the healthy liver in place and again reconnect it to your bile ducts and blood vessels. A new liver starts producing bile as soon as blood vessels are reconnected. A large number of tubes need to be placed inside the body which are sequentially removed over next few days as the patient clinically improves.
